ChatGPT vs. Google Bard – Who will win the AI race

A crazy hype has been generated around ChatGPT worldwide since its release to the public in November 2022. The popular chatbot from OpenAI is estimated to have reached 100 million monthly active users in January, just two months after launch, making it the fastest-growing consumer application in history. ChatGPT was developed by Open AI, which was later invested in by Microsoft for $10 billion.

In contrast, Google created Bard as their response to the increasing popularity of ChatGPT. Both chatbots use generative AI, which means that they can create content automatically to answer questions. However, Bard is different from ChatGPT in that it uses more recent training data, giving it an edge when it comes to providing up-to-date information.

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is a state-of-the-art language model developed by Open AI, a research organization focused on advancing artificial intelligence technologies. Language models like ChatGPT are designed to understand and generate human-like responses to natural language queries and conversations.

ChatGPT is based on the GPT-3.5 (GPT-4 has just been released as we were working on this article. Stay tuned for GPT-4 article) architecture, which is an advanced version of the popular GPT-3 language model. GPT-3.5 uses a massive neural network trained on a vast amount of data to generate high-quality, contextually relevant responses to a wide variety of natural language inputs. As a language model, ChatGPT can be used for a wide range of tasks, including answering questions, providing recommendations, generating text, and more. It has been designed to provide a more natural and human-like conversational experience for users and it is continuously improving as it is trained on more data and refined through ongoing research and development.

How does ChatGPT work?

ChatGPT is a natural language processing (NLP) model based on the GPT-3.5 architecture, which uses a deep neural network to generate text in response to prompts or questions. The model is pre-trained on a massive amount of text data, such as books, articles, and websites, to learn patterns and relationships between words and phrases.

When you ask a question or give a prompt to ChatGPT, the model uses its pre-trained knowledge to generate a response that is most relevant to the input. It does this by breaking down the input into smaller units called tokens, which are then processed by the neural network. The model uses attention mechanisms to focus on different parts of the input and generate a response that is coherent and grammatically correct.

ChatGPT is designed to be flexible and adaptable to a wide range of language tasks, including text completion, summarization, and translation. It is also capable of generating creative and imaginative responses, making it useful for tasks such as storytelling and generating new ideas.

Overall, ChatGPT works by using deep learning techniques to generate text that is relevant and coherent based on the input it receives. Its ability to learn from massive amounts of data and generate human-like responses has made it a powerful tool for a variety of language tasks.

What is Google Bard?

Bard was unveiled on February 6 as Google’s response to the increasing popularity of ChatGPT. Bard is an experimental Google chatbot that is powered by the Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA) large language model.

It’s a generative AI that accepts prompts and performs text-based tasks like providing answers and summaries and creating various forms of content.

Bard seeks to combine the breadth of the world’s knowledge with the power, intelligence and creativity of our large language models. It draws on information from the web to provide fresh, high-quality responses. year-old, or learn more about the best strikers in football right now, and then get drills to build your skills.

Both chatbots use generative AI, which means that they can create content automatically to answer questions.

Generative AI

Generative AI refers to a category of artificial intelligence systems that are designed to create or generate new content such as text, images, videos, or even music. Unlike other types of AI systems that rely on pre-existing data to make predictions or decisions, generative AI systems have the ability to generate entirely new content based on a given input.

Generative AI models are typically based on deep learning techniques such as neural networks, and they are trained on large datasets of existing content. By learning patterns and features from this data, generative AI models can then use this knowledge to create new content that is similar to, but not identical to, the original data.

Some examples of generative AI applications include image and video generation, text and speech synthesis, and music composition. These systems have the potential to revolutionize many fields, from creative industries to healthcare and education, by enabling computers to generate new content that was previously only possible with human creativity.

Similarities between ChatGPT and Bard

  • Both models are designed to process natural language and generate human-like responses.
  • They are both based on a neural network architecture called Transformers, which has been shown to be highly effective for natural language processing tasks.
  • Both chatbots use generative AI, which means that they can create content automatically to answer questions.

Differences between ChatGPT and Bard

ChatGPT

Google Bard

ChatGPT uses its Generative Pre-training Transformer 3 (GPT-3) model or Generative Pre-training Transformer 4 (GPT-4), depending on the version, which is trained on data prior to late 2021.

Google Bard uses Google's Language Model for Dialogue Applications (LaMDA), and can offer responses based on real-time, current research pulled from the internet.

ChatGPT was trained on a massive dataset of text, including Common Crawl, Wikipedia, books, articles, documents, and content scraped from the open internet—but its sources end in 2021, limiting latest world events and research

Bard was trained on Infiniset, a data set including Common Crawl, Wikipedia, documents, and conversations and dialogues from the web; Bard will supposedly search the web in real-time to find the most recent answers to questions and latest research

Accessible through ChatGPT site. Only text responses are returned via queries.

Integrated with Google Search. You only need to change a Google setting to get your regular search results when using Google Bard AI, and vice versa.

Has built-in plagiarism tool called GPT-2 Output Detector.

No built-in plagiarism detection tool.

ChatGPT is free to all users; ChatGPT Plus is billed at $20/month to include access during peak times, faster response times, priority access to new features, and use of GPT-4

Bard is free to users who have access

Conclusion

Bard vs. ChatGPT: Which is better?

Both ChatGPT and Bard are highly advanced AI language models. It is difficult to determine which model is more powerful, ChatGPT or Bard, as they are designed to perform different functions and excel in different areas. ChatGPT is better at generating and summarizing text, while Google Bard will be better at surfacing relevant information to questions. It's still early days for both tools, though, and only time will tell which outperforms the other.Ultimately, the choice between ChatGPT and Bard will depend on the specific requirements of the task at hand, and the strengths and weaknesses of each model for that task.
